Reborn runners first report

After 6 weeks of daily rehab training and core muscle training, my physiotherapist at last said I was ready. Ready for my first run after 6 weeks "no-run" order (and 5 years of piriformis hassle).

4 kg lighter and in quite good shape...it was examination day and I felt I couldn't have prepared myself better - so full of expectation !

7 min walk, 18min easy run and 5 min walk (threadmill). It felt quite good, but the day after and the day after that I didn't feel good at all in my hip joints and felt quite dissapointed...piriformis aced and gluteus minimus was full of trigger points. I discussed with my physiotherapist and he insisted I should give it one more try within 3 or 4 days and continue the rehab training. So I did, and yesterday I took a 14+14 minute easy crosscountry run and it felt so good. Today, the day after I still feel OK ! Although it is too early to declare me 100% fit for running, I now feel that I, with the right patience and continued core strenght training will be able to come back as a runner.

My first partly goal is to be able to do 2 or 3 30min runs a week without hip joint and piriformis problems. This will probably require 3 days per week of core strenght training and alternative training like biking and swimming. If still ok after a few months of the 30 minute run program, then I can gradually extend time and km...
Still a very fragile plan but it jolly feels good right now !

  1. Hi Mr W ! I believe your physiotherapist is right. Of course you should not accept to much pain. But I remember that when I started very slowly my comeback after my "piriformis"-break in 1990 (strong medicine and appr. 10 times of "electricity pulse chock" treatment on my piriformis, I did run with some pain, and it came back, but not to much. It was also my naphrapat and my doctors advice to overwin the problems, but it took time... hell of a long time. It's so nice to read that you are on your way... just have patience and ramp up slowly, if the pain then not get worse you know that you gonna win the fight :-)
