Mr Legends Karlstad 6-timmars Ultra plan

Hi all !
After a lot of thinking around my goal for my third Ultra in 2010 this is how
I feel about it ;

1) Try to stay focused on not exceeding 150bpm (85%-level) before 30km.
2) Whatever happens no 10km,s sub 60min.....
3) try to eat some more during the race than I am used to do

Of course it would be so nice to beat my own personal record 53,1km from Skövde.

I will of course post a detailed report early in next week....

  1. Sounds good Mr. Legend!

So if I understand correctly, you will be monitoring your HR to stay below 85% during the first 30 KM, but even if your HR is down in the 70% range, you will not go faster than 6 Mins per KM at any point during the race? Seems inconsistent with your training. Your long run on Aug 25th was 30 KM at 5:37 pace with an average HR of 136 (77%). If you have similar conditions in Karlstad, wouldn't you allow yourself to run whatever pace feels comfortable in your HR range, even if it is below 6 mins per KM?

  2. Hi Mr USC !
    Thanks for your comment....

I see your point here, and that makes me a little bit confused here. Of course if HR stays at same low level as on my latest LR it will be very hard to stay slower than 6min/km - tempo. But on the other hand after 30km there is still allmost 3 hours to go, and in Skövde (of course not fully comparable) I was a not able to run all 6 hours (last laps was more or less power walk). So my point here is that sooner or later I will anyway reach above my 85% HR-level, and that is when my real fight starts....

I am fully convinced that I should be able to make first 30km in quite comfortable 5,45-tempo , but I am so afraid of what is happening after that.....

  3. Yes, I agree.

But if you do keep the discipline of 6 mins per KM, and your HR stays at low levels, don't you see the possibility of running 60 KM's in six hours?

  4. I can admit I have had that thoughts, perhaps I have to much respect for it. But back again to Skövde the fact is that El Maco actually was a lot more "fresh" then me last two hours...

And even worse, very soon after I was reaching my 85% level in Skövde I was also hitting 90%,
and that must not happen in Karlstad, since then I am into the "wall" again.

One day I will make 60km,s that's for sure, but I don't know if I am capable for it yet :-)

  5. I Don't agree with Mr USC. I would say that you should nog run 1 km faster than 6 min /km. I know for a face that you get so hot during the first 10km of a race and you always go faster than you shoud. This is a 6 hour run. To run 60km is nothing you will do tomorrow. If you reach 56km, that would be fantastic. But please, do not start too fast!

In Skövde my HR was appr 141-145 during the firt 3 hours!

  6. Yepp, I do agree that starting slow (6 mins per KM) is the best plan!

But what I am getting at is that if Mr. Legend runs 6 mins per KM, and conditions are similar to his Aug 25th long run, then he will not even come close to an 85% HR in the first 30 KMs, and if HR is his guide, maybe he should plan on keeping it below 70% for the first 30 KMs.

  7. Good luck ! I'm sure you will have nice journey ! (I had an idea of going to Karlstad to look, but it didn't work out)

  10. Hi Lee ! Karlstad was great last autumn, but my plan now is to go for Skövde 6-hours in March. Will you do Karlstad in Feb ? Good luck to you if you do..... sounds nice with indoor running in Feb ... My only whish right now is that February will not be as cold as in 2010... :-)
