OK, now I have read the "soon to be legendary" book Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. Since over a year I have already been pretty much convinced that barefoot running is the way we are born to do (or our forgotten instinct ! ) - however after reading this book I'm more or less obsessed by the thought of barefoot running and also minimal sandal running. For those who havn't read the book, Huaraches is the Tarahumaran name on minimal running sandals. So, I have ordered the Luna DIY (Do it yourself) Sandals. I will try these as a supplement to completely bare barefoot running, particularly on demanding surfaces such as sharp gravel and nature/rocky trails. They are supposed to imitate barefoot running and offer some protection/comfort at the same time.
It's now one year ago since I started my conversion from shod (traditional running shoe) runner to barefoot runner and I must say it has been demanding but worth every second. I still put on my old running shoes now and then - because all kind of variation strenghtens the body and it allows me to gain more km's during the transition to barefoot.
When I started a year ago, I expected that my foot soles would change and I feared damaging my feet. Strangely, none of my expectations or fears happened. The only change is that I have become more and more unwilling to wear shoes - and more and more happy runner ! The foot soles have not become harder (from calluse build up) but maybe a bit more "leather" like. I have never got any big cuts or bruises that kept me away from running during this time, only a few blisters from intense asphalt running.
For those interested to know more abaout barefoot or minimal sandal running, here is a very useful website describing how to do. http://barefootrunning.fas.harvard.edu/index.html
Summer !
Summer means running and swimming for me. I love when I can do a run and stop by a lake for a swim ! What can be more "practical" to do this barefoot in just running shorts - no shoes, socks or clothes to pull off or put on before and after the swim...just jump into the water and swim and then just climb up and continue to run.
